E-coli Spinach Contamination
Reported Caused by Cow Manure

Recent reports have linked the contaminated spinach that claimed three lives and sickened hundreds more with E-coli specifically traced to cow manure. Research is underway to isolate the method of contamination, but it is presently suspected to have been transported through irrigation water.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service has an excellent article entitled Manures for Organic Crop Production by George Kuepper, an NCAT Agriculture Specialist, that illustrates and explains exactly the differences between raw and composted manures, guanos, and will help the average consumer better understand how these products impact our agricultural practices and food supplies.

Many growers and greenhouses are now growing with soil-free, hydroponic methods which greatly reduce the chances for E-coli and other bacterial contamination. You can learn more about the benefits these soil-free methods here.
